Yama & Niyama Defined

The first two stages of Patanjali's ashtanga yoga system, being a set of five restraints (yamas) and five observances (niyamas) that constitute the "ten commandments" of India. Stability in yama and niyama is considered essential for succuss in the practice of pranayama."Yama consists of: non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, continence, and non-greed." ( Yoga Sutras 2:30)"Niyama consists of: purity, contentment, accepting but not causing pain, spiritual study, and worship of the divine lord."
